Project: The Walden
Project Type: Tiny Home Project
Pre: The Walden was a gateway project towards numerous students, including myself to learn the feasibility and sustainability a tiny home can offer. The metal shop containing hundreds of students from Rancho Cotate Highschool, in collaboration of investments from local firms, leading this project to become realized was Cole Smith. The lead designers to bring this project closer to a reality were in part with Jason Leung and I.
Challenge: How can we develop a sustainable home, under a $30,000 Budget, and restricted physically in its form to 18'x8.5' trailer with the max allotted height of 13 feet for common U.S infrastructure over passes and tunnel-ways. Lastly; How can we develop this project to fruition, with new students coming on board to assist, every day for the next year?
Solution: The Walden was completed at the hands of our leadership and the furthering encouragement from local sources reporting this event. We successfully, designed, fabricated and constructed a cabin like home, with cost saving yet high preforming insulation, Composting Toilets, A rain recycle catch that would feed back into the water heating tank, and circulated to the kitchen or bathroom. This home was 100% Sustainable on Solar Power, and can last over 10 days in  the dark full use. The home came with a large loft to fit a king mattress and held a progressive amount of electrical outlets for the customers needs.  The bathroom had its toilet, sink, and tile masoned shower unit. There were space allowed for a manageable living room that accompanied  the kitchen nearby. A couple who lost their home in the 2017 Tubbs Fire, came across our project via local news, and reached out to us to purchase this home. It is easy to say, this was the gateway to where we are now.
